Scribble creatures willow weave animal sculptures

Scribble creatures are woven willow animal sculptures made in the southern Lake District (Cumbria) by Helen Evans.

Helen’s willow sculptures come in a variety of forms. Large four legged animals such as pigs, sheep and dogs and deer are suitable as outdoor or garden ornaments, whilst smaller more portable sculptures such as chickens / hens, ducks and other forms (hedgehogs, geese, cats and small dogs etc.) are suitable for enjoying either outdoors or in a cool indoor position.

Sculptures of specific creatures are made on commission, however a stock of ducks, hens etc. is always available. Scribble creatures are sculpted individually rather than being made to set patterns so each has its own particular personality!

The sculptures are made from English willow rods or withies, using traditional basketry weaving techniques. Normally the creatures are made from green or buff willow however other colours are available on request.

There is no wire or metalwork within the bodies of sculptures however small metal ground loops are sometimes necessary to peg creatures to the ground in case of windy conditions! Although the smaller animals usually stand on their own two or four feet, animals large and small can be made with legs which will push into the ground (or plant pots/wondow boxes) to provide anchors- no-one wants a tumbleweed escapee!

As Scribblecreatures are natural products, treatment with linseed or teak oil will elongate their lives. More detailed care instructions are provided with each creature.

ScribbleCreatures are produced mainly on commission. At present, some ScribbleCreatures are available at Yew Tree Barn, Low Newton, near Cartmel in south Cumbria. Helen has stalls at craft shows in Cumbria through the year and at Blenheim International Horse Trials in September (details of shows and gallery availability will be posted here as and when).

As a general price guide, most of the small creatures pictured on this website cost between £40 and £65, hedgehogs are £20 (all including p&p). Larger commissions are a little more! Normally sculptures can be produced and delivered within a couple of weeks depending on the time of year. Please get in touch! Helen’s brother David Evans produces wooden chainsaw carvings of many different animals; bears, dragons, meerkats and owls are currently his most popular carvings. David's carving skills come from producing cross country jumps for horses, but he also carves smaller more portable animals for garden ornaments. These are produced on commission; visit David Evans' website www.evansjumps.co.uk for more pictures and information.
